THE OBVERSE
GEORGE WASHINGTON
The design on the quarter was modeled after a plaster-bust created by Jean-Antoine Houdon in 1786. The bust was used as a guide for Houdon to sculp a full statue of Washington.
The full statue stands in the rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol building. Where the bust created in 1786 is located, yours truly is not sure. The image of Washington that appeared on the 1932 Quarter was designed by John Flanagan. The image of Washington on the Quarter was altered in 1999 and remained altered until 2020. In 2021 the Flanagan design returned on the observe side of the Quarter. |

THE REVERSE
From 1932 to 1998, with the exception of 1975 and 1976, the reverse side of the Quarter featured the Heraldic Eagle (it's actually "Phoenix" and not an Eagle; an Eagle does not have a crest on the back of its head).
An "Eagle" represents a release from bondage; a "Phoenix" represents immortality, resurrection, and life after death. From 1975 to 1976 the reverse featured a drummer to commemorate the U.S.A.'s bicentennial. |
From 1999 to 2008 - The Reverse side of the Quarters paid ode to the 50 states.
In 2009 - the reverse side of the Quarter paid homage to the District Columbia and other U.S. Territories. From 2010 to 2020 the "America the Beautiful" series was issued to honor America's park system. 56 reverse sides were created representing parks in the 50 states and other territories. |
