My Thoughts
The Treaty of Ghent is the agreement that ended the War of 1812.
I think in a lot of the lectures, documentaries, and summaries above the point of the War of 1812 is missed.
Much like the American Revolution, the War of 1812 was about the control of America's Monetary System. The purpose of the American Revolution was to cause financial hardship to the American Colonies. While the British may have "lost" the American Revolution, in the end they got what they wanted - a Central Bank set up in America.
The purpose of the Central Bank is to handle the debt compiled from the War.
The initial Central Bank attempt in 1781 (The Bank of North America) was unsuccessful, due to the Article of Confederations parameters on the Federal Government for taxing its citizens. As a result the Articles of Confederation were discarded for the Constitution in 1787 which increased the Federal Government's ability to tax.
In 1787 the Constitution was adopted, in 1789 George Washington was elected President, and in 1791 the British got their American Central Bank (The First Bank of the United States) because the American's were in financial debt thanks to the Revolution.
The American's regained financial stability and in 1811 the Central Bank was closed - here is why the War of 1812 happened. The European powers needed to cause financial ruin to America again. The debt compiled from the War of 1812 caused America to open another Central Bank (the Second Bank of the United States), which happened in 1816.
So, the purpose of the War of 1812 was about the control of America's money supply, just like the Revolution was. The American's wanted the independency to create and control their own monetary system and the European powers (British) that shouldn't be wanted to control it. The War(s) weren't about territory, they were about monetary control.
